Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network

Our Purpose

Our vision is a political, economic, social, and culturally egalitarian society. We move toward that future by defending the speech that power seeks to erase. We are building a defense network a living infrastructure of solidarity, legal support, and media amplification—to protect those who speak truth to power and to resist the silencing of dissent.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network exists to defend political speech/media and its practitioners that confront repression, and to amplify voices from the margins via the media. Our mission is to protect independent journalism and safeguard the right to dissent—especially when it challenges structures of power that exploit, divide, and dominate.

We do not seek permission from power. We reject the way resistance, protest, or radical ideas are sometimes packaged, marketed, and sold—often stripped of their political power or urgency—to be made palatable, profitable, or safe for mainstream consumption. We reject the co-optation of resistance. Our work is non-commercial, non-corporate, and independent of state influence—especially when the state acts repressively.

Practicing What We Preach

We hold ourselves to the same principles we demand from others. We are committed to rooting out bias and elitism within our own ranks. We reject hierarchical structures that concentrate power and silence dissent.

Instead, we seek to build a culture of shared leadership, transparency and mutual accountability.

Our network works affirmatively to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Our decision-making and organizing practices are grounded in equity, justice, and anti-oppression.

How we work is as important as what we work toward.

What We Hope to Build

We aim to create a responsive and principled infrastructure to protect media-makers whose work challenges power and speaks from the margins. Our vision includes a Rapid Response Network that can mobilize when political expression is under threat. We seek to defend journalists, media-makers, and truth-tellers who “authority” would silence whether through censorship, criminalization, or the dismantling of the platforms, and or the revocation of the license that delivers political speech.

We stand in opposition to the silencing of journalists- the persecution, prosecution and outright targeted killing of journalists, witness the more than 200 Palestinian journalists killed by Israel without accountability.

We hope to host regular forums and educational events to analyze attacks on media and support myth-busting efforts. These gatherings will help us coordinate responses—whether through legal support, grassroots media campaigns, or public education. We also aim to serve as a hub for curating media-related data and occasionally producing accessible materials, like pamphlets, to build solidarity campaigns with journalists, media-makers, and institutions targeted by repression and or direct-action campaigns.

We stand against efforts to suppress dissent by targeting not only the message, but the messengers and how they reach the public.
