Nondeductible Contribution and Acceptance Policy

Contributions to Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network or other informal organizations are generally not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

Acceptance of any contribution, gift, or grant is at the discretion of Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network. The organization will not accept any gift unless it can be used or expended in a manner consistent with the organization’s purpose and mission.

No irrevocable gift, whether outright or life-income in character, will be accepted if, under any reasonable circumstances, the gift would jeopardize the donor’s financial security.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network will not provide advice about the tax or other treatment of gifts and will encourage donors to seek guidance from their own professional advisers when making a donation. That said, we are an informal political organization, and contributions to us are not deductible for federal income tax purposes as charitable contributions.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network will accept donations of cash or publicly traded securities. Gifts of in-kind services will be accepted at the organization’s discretion.

Certain other gifts, real property, personal property, in-kind gifts, non-liquid securities, and contributions whose sources are not transparent or whose uses are restricted in some manner must be reviewed prior to acceptance due to special obligations or liabilities they may pose for Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network will provide acknowledgments to donors meeting tax requirements for gifts of property received by the organization. However, except for gifts of cash or publicly traded securities, no value shall be ascribed to any receipt or other form of substantiation of a gift received by the organization.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network will respect the donor’s intent regarding gifts for restricted purposes and those related to a desire to remain anonymous. With respect to anonymous gifts, the organization will restrict information about the donor to only those staff members with a need to know.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network will not compensate any third party for directing a gift or a donor to the organization, whether through commissions, finders' fees, or other means.
