You have the right to privacy.

It's your data, not ours.

Please read this policy to understand how we (Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network) protect and use information we collect about you.

Online Community Platform Privacy Statement

This policy explains how our organization will use information we gather about you from your visit to our platform (platform/app). The privacy of our community members is of the utmost importance to us.

If you visit one of our platforms...

  1. We agree to:

    1. Not track you or build any metrics about you, except as strictly essential to:

      1. Fulfill any request you make (including the provision of services that we provide for you, such as our studio space).

      2. Reasonably protect our community and deter abuse and fraud.

      3. Keep our services working for your benefit and at your request.

      4. Empower you to use your own data for your own benefit, whenever you choose, without having to give it away, sell it, or trade your privacy away.

  2. You have:

    1. Immutable ownership of your personal data. This is a basic human right. Whether governments or others acknowledge or respect this right shall not nullify it. You can lend your data to providers, and when you are finished, you have the right to take most of that data back with you, except as reasonably necessary to maintain a record of transactions and to meet applicable accounting practices and principles.

The information that you provide on our platform will be used only for its intended purpose, except as required by law or if pertinent to judicial or governmental investigations or proceedings.

We will protect your information in accordance with the highest legal standards and ethical principles of privacy.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on our platform, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Privacy Policy

Who we are

Our website address is https://idabwellsmediadefense.org.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string to help detect spam.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Google reCAPTCHA

When a reCAPTCHA logo is present, at the time of login/contact/donation form submission only (not used within other, general community areas): we use reCAPTCHA, which collects personal information from users to determine whether they are human and not a bot to prevent spam. The reCAPTCHA algorithm checks whether there is a Google cookie placed on the computer being used. An additional reCAPTCHA-specific cookie will then be added to the userโ€™s browser, allowing a complete snapshot of the userโ€™s browser window at that moment in time.

Information gathered includes:

  • All cookies placed by Google over the last six months
  • How many mouse clicks youโ€™ve made on that screen (or touches on a touch device)
  • The CSS information for that page
  • The date
  • The language your browser is set to
  • Any plugins you have installed on the browser
  • All Javascript objects

You can read Google's Terms and Privacy for more information.

The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network has no access to or control over these cookies that are used by third parties such as Google reCAPTCHA. You should consult the respective privacy policies of the above third parties for more detailed information on their practices as well as for instructions about how to opt out from certain practices. The Ida B. Wells Media Defense Networkโ€™s Privacy Policy does not apply to, and we cannot control the activities of, such other websites. If you wish to disable cookies, you may do so through your browser options. More detailed information about cookie management with specific web browsers can be found on the browsersโ€™ respective platforms.

These conventions are subject to change in the future, and members will be notified.
